Interior Design Intern Elise gave her thoughts on Interning During COVID Summer 2020.

What is it like to start a new job during the COVID 19 confinement?
Starting a new job during COVID 19 is interesting. It definitely poses some additional challenges, but it has its advantages as well. I think the most important thing I’ve learned from this experience is the importance of flexibility and communication.

How were you able to connect with co-workers?
I mostly connected with co-workers through video calls or instant messaging – usually when I had to ask them another dozen questions.

Did you have the right equipment and tools to do your job effectively?
As a college student I was already used to working online, so working remotely was not an issue. If I needed any other specific equipment, all I had to do was ask – everyone was very accommodating and understanding of the situation.

Pros and cons of working remotely?
Working remotely means I can sleep in a little, hang out with my dog all day, and work in comfy clothes. However, it also makes communication more difficult and does not allow me to experience arcDesign’s true office culture.

What are you looking forward to when the office is back to normal?
I am looking forward to meeting everyone in person and experiencing arcDesign’s seemingly fun and unique office culture – especially the ping pong tournaments.

Unique or favorite COVID meal?
I don’t have a favorite COVID meal, but I have enjoyed making different baked goods for my family.

Where did you set up your home office?
My home office is set up in my bedroom. I have three younger brothers, so finding anywhere else quiet enough to work is a struggle.

A unique tradition at arcDESIGN is to sign the brick wall on your first day at the office. Filled with both full time employee and intern signatures, the wall is a great way to see names and start dates of your co-workers.

Architectural Design Intern, Ross.
I cannot thank you enough for bringing me on to the arcDESIGN team this summer. Being my first real office experience, I had no idea what to expect or what my intern tasks would be. Little did I know that I would get to be a part of 10 different projects, experience almost all phases of the job, go to different building sites, be a part of an interview and significantly improve my ping pong abilities.
I am happy to say you all made me feel like I deserved my spot here. I am leaving my school email and my cell number so we can stay in touch! Also, if you’re interested in seeing what the IU program is doing feel free to come visit or follow me on Instagram as I occasionally post my projects and other cool stuff that’s going on!
